I was invited to attend a special screening of the TOPP TWINS Documentary. If I'm totally honest I was expecting some dreary life story of two struggling lesbian comedians. But what i got was totally different.
This film follows the lives of two Country Singing, comedy lesbian twins, whose closeness and free spirited approach to life is something to be admired.
The audience goes on a very uplifting journey of their lives in the Country Music scene in New Zealand. It focuses on their political view points in a light-hearted way but with very strong beliefs in women and gay rights.
The main highlight of this film is the multifaceted characters they play out in front of packed audiences.
Some of their regular characters include Ken and Ken, two older sophisticated gentlemen with an eye for the ladies, Camp Mother and Camp Leader, two outrageously outrageous women, Belle and Bell, fabulous yodellers and many many more.
They put on a colourful, energetic showcase of pure fun and some very impressive singing.
Think a Kiwi version of French and Saunders but Country and Western style.
In my opinion, this is a powerful piece of companionship, friendship, love, free spirited, easy going lifestyle we should all strive to. Its about two successful, genuinely enjoying life twins who are out and proud. I genuinely felt like i want to stand up and cheer...
It's beautifully shot, with a montage of unseen footage from the late 70’s right through to the 90’s. It follows their highs, lows and loves, how they survived and where they are now. It has highs, lows, jokes, songs, interviews and many genius gags which will put a smile on even the Republicans faces.
Go and see this film... it will leave you feeling uplifted and loaded with some funny one liners to amuse your mates with. But be warned, there is an emotional twist.
